Earth Day Activities in the neighborhood

There are so many Earth Day related things going on in and around NW Philly this year, that it’s far too many to have enough time to mention them on Planet Philadelphia. Here are just a few. And of course to celebrate Earth day do please tune in to Planet Philadelphia 4-5 pm this Friday, 4/20/18, on GTown Radio at http://www.gtownradio.com/ or listen on your radio dial in northwest Philadelphia on WGGT 92.9 low power FM.

April 21, 1:00 - 4:00 pm
Awbury Arboretum, join us for the signature event for the Year of the Pollinator! 
FREE and open to the public.  No registration is required.
Location: the Cope House at Awbury Arboretum, 1 Awbury Rd, Philadelphia, PA 19138.
The day will include:

• Scavenger Hunt - We are unveiling our Year of the Pollinator tiles!  Each one will be mounted in its own “habitat” throughout the Arboretum, and guests may use our specially designed map to find all twelve beautiful pieces.
• Parlor Exhibition- Celebrate the opening of “Botanically Inspired: Ceramic Tiles and Related Work” by Karen Singer, which will remain the Cope House parlors through May.
• Studio Talk - At 2:00 PM, Artist Karen Singer will present a brief talk on “Cross-Pollination: Art, Gardens, and Community.”
• Educational Activities - Master Naturalist and Master Gardener Nancy Pasquier will guide family-friendly walking tours where guests of all ages can discover more about pollinators at Awbury.

Come to the "Blessing of the Trees" as the tradition continues with the planting of new trees  by Germantown Interfaith Power & Light Tree Tenders. 5847 Germantown Ave. Vegetarian Chili will be provided at the First United Methodist Church of Germantown, 6001 Germantown Ave after the blessing.

11 tree planting events - Philly & suburbs
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society: We all know our neighborhood could use more trees. They offer us cooler homes, shady sidewalks for interchanges with neighbors, increased property values, clean up the air from car exhaust, and more! With over 750 trees being planted this weekend,  there are 11 events on this day. Find one near you,  and help out in any way you can... digging, planting, pruning, watering, delivering food & water for the teams, and even taking photos! If your home or block lacks street trees, start thinking about a fall planting. The trees are free to you, as are the volunteer-led plantings like these. What’s not to like? Friends of the Wissahickon and the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association for the Annual Creek Cleanup and Talkin' Trash Picnic. FOW will be working with the Philadelphia Canoe Club around the confluence of the Creek and the Schuylkill, while WVWA will be making things nicer upstream. After the cleanup (9-11 a.m.), all volunteers are invited to the picnic at Fort Washington State Park (11 a.m.-1 p.m.). Click here for more info on how to sign up.
