We spoke about many of the different ways Philly is becoming a sustainable city despite big climate change challenges with Christine Knapp and Adam Agalloco of Philadelphia's Office of Sustainability. Also on this show, Peter Winslow gave us the latest on what is happening at PES refinery that blew it sell up last year, who might be acquiring the facility, and how they might run it.

Today New Planet Philadelphia! Progress towards Sustainability

Today we talk about Philadelphia’s progress towards sustainability. How’s our city doing in transitioning towards sustainability? Also today, what's up with the PES refinery. Will it still be one of the biggest sources of pollution in the city or will we all breathe cleaner air? What are the job prospects going forward?

Guests today are:

Christine Knapp and Adam Agalloco, of the city government’s Office of Sustainability. Christine is Director of the Office and Adam a primary author of the recent Municipal Energy Master Plan for the Built Environment of the city as well as City Energy Manager of the Energy Office. They will discuss this master plan and other recent initiatives of the Office of Sustainability.

Peter Winslow, has talked to us regularly for the last several months about Philadelphia Energy Solutions, (PES) which is the largest refinery on the east coast. He has been following the fast moving developments with the refinery’s bankruptcy closely. He will give us the latest news about what is happening at PES, who might be acquiring the facility, and how they might run it.

We have big challenges ahead from climate change. One of the biggest is how to provide electricity when needed with less pollution and harmful green house gasses. How will the grid accommodate renewable energy and energy sources with less greenhouse gas emissions? What is the role of energy storage in moderating fluctuating sources of energy? Will having more micro-grids add to stability or will they be disruptive?
