There are more biological species on our earth than we ever imagined and their characteristics and capacities are innumerable. Here are a few ways to discover and understand this diversity.
  • Toby Kiers is an evolutionary biologist at the Free University of Amsterdam and Director of SPUN, a research organization promoting the kind of fungi that make underground networks with plants (mycorrhizal). Toby is the winner of the 2026 Tyler Prize (often dubbed the Green Nobel) and a MacArthur Genius Fellow. She will tell us about the amazing characteristics of these organisms, including their ability to help with climate change, and how she is disseminating knowledge about them and discovering new types of them all over the globe.
  • Alison Young is Director of Outreach at iNaturalist, a citizen scientist organization collecting data worldwide. At iNaturalist, she works to grow and support the iNaturalist community in their efforts to document and learn more about nature around the globe. iNaturalist provides a place to record and organize nature findings, meet other nature enthusiasts, and learn about the natural world.

Joshua Jackson is founder of the Forgotten Lands Project, a writer and photographer whose work illuminates America’s most overlooked public lands—those managed federally by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). He weaves storytelling and imagery to reveal the beauty, complexity, and vulnerability of these often misunderstood landscapes. His work has appeared numerous publications. He discusses his recent book, “The Enduring Wild: A Journey into California’s Public Lands”, and the BLM lands of our West. The book is both a love letter to these landscapes and a meditation on belonging and reciprocity.

​Björn Embrén has been appointed Honorary Doctor of Agricultural Sciences at the Faculty of Landscape Architecture, Horticulture and Crop Production Science at SLU (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences). He is a consultant and former tree specialist for the City of Stockholm. His technique, the “Stockholm tree pit” method, for establishing planting beds has completely transformed how to sustain these essential urban trees in paved-over urban spaces. He discusses the long-term, methodological and creative experimentation which led to these techniques and the resulting method which could be used in most other urban settings.

Jacobson  is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the Atmosphere/Energy Program at Stanford University.  He has written two books on this question based on his global research gathering:  “No Miracles Needed:  How Today’s Technology Can Save our Climate and Clean our Air” and an updated version recently released “Still No Miracles Needed”.  He discusses his findings and why and how he came to these conclusions.​

As the year ends, we wanted to bring you positive news: some projects at the national/international and local levels that can move us forward environmentally. ​
​Dr. Maria Antonia Tigre is the Director of Global Climate Change Litigation at the Sabin Center. She manages the Sabin Center's Global Climate Change Litigation Database with the support of the Sabin Center's Peer Review Network of Climate Litigation. Maria Antonia is a leading expert in the field of climate change law and climate litigation, having published dozens of articles on the topic. Her research particularly focuses on rights-based climate litigation, climate litigation in the Global South, and the forthcoming advisory opinions on climate change. We will be talking about some big rulings in international courts recognizing the human right to a healthy climate.
Devi Ramkissoon is the Chief Sustainability Officer of Montgomery County PA, a collar county of Philadelphia. She was recently appointed to this newly created position. We will be talking with her about how this new initiative is going to affect sustainability, the citizenry, and business.
