Colleges and universities are some of our most influential institutions. How are sustainability efforts proceeding there and affecting students, staff and faculty?

Etsuko Hoshino-Browne, Janis Chakars and Sister Pat Hutchinson are faculty and/or administrators at Neumann University in Pennsylvania, which in 2023 was named one of the top 3 Catholic campuses in the country for climate action and environmental sustainability. They will describe their sustainability programs, how they managed to be effective as a small Catholic college, and the challenges they have been facing. There are lessons for other college and university systems.

There’s been considerable press about microgrids, localized energy systems capable of operating independently, but slow implementation of these systems. How do they affect our environment and what is their status?

Cameron Brooks is Executive Director of Think Microgrid, a nonprofit membership coalition that represents the microgrid industry in critical policy, legislative and regulatory discussions. He also has served in executive roles with clean energy companies and nonprofits. He will explain the various types of microgrids, their advantages and the challenges related to their deployment.

Susan Christian, Dominique London and Allison Wright. Allison and Susan are active members and leaders in GREAT (Germantown Residents for Economic Alternatives Together). Dominique London recently hosted an emergency preparedness 101 series for GREAT. They have developed a number of helpful techniques and workshops for this purpose which can be models for communities in other places, as well as have learned important lessons about these problems.

Women are uniquely and more often negatively affected by climate change, but they also have unique, important and often overlooked contributions to solving the crisis. We examine here how some women from different generations are working to help our environment.

Osprey Orielle Lake, Founder and Executive Director of the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) International. She has received a number of awards for her work and has a recent book: “The Story is in Our Bones: How Worldviews and Climate Justice Can Remake a World in Crisis”. She will talk about her work and the Women’s Momentum Assembly for a Just Fossil Fuel Phaseout, a recent global assembly of women working on these issues

Magnolia Brown is senior in high school from Delaware County, PA, who has developed a podcast, “What in the World?! A Sustainability Journey”, to educate herself and other teens about sustainability. She describes what motivated her as a young person, her process in launching this podcast and the effect it has had.
