Reducing Fossil Fuels: Geothermal Energy - Possible New Use for PES?

8/28/2019

At a national level there are alternatives to fossil fuels, and we are exploring one of them, geothermal energy production.  Locally, PES refinery might be used in less greenhouse- producing ways. Tune in to Planet Philadelphia 4-5 pm Friday 9/6/19 on WGGT-LP 92.9 FM Germantown Community Radio and streaming at gtownradio.com.

Katherine Young:  is laboratory program manager in Geoscience at the NREL (National Renewable Energy Lab), a federal lab dedicated to the research, development, commercialization, and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.  She has particular expertise in geothermal energy and will be talking about the prospects for geothermal energy particularly in light of the recent national report on geothermal energy.

Peter Winslow  has worked on a Port Development Plan and on projects for the Department of Defense, Carnegie Mellon, Siemens, and Rutgers. He is the President of the Evolve Foundation and the Founder/President of the FLAG (the Free Loan Association for Germantown).  A long-term advocate for the environmental and social justice community, Peter has followed developments at Philadelphia Energy Solutions (PES) for a several years.  Peter has talked to us monthly for the last two months about PES (the largest refinery on the east coast).  He will give us the latest news about what is happening at PES in the wake of the fire and closure of the facility since he last talked to us. Is there a realistic possibility that the site can be used in a way that does not encourage the use of fossil fuels?

Painted Lady by Elfie Harris, an artist who has lived in Germantown most of her life.

Picture
Painted Lady © Elfie Harris

This is a “Painted lady.” Some estimates are that it takes 6,000 to 9,000 caterpillars to raise a chickadee chick. Those caterpillars are sometimes ones we wish would grow into butterflies, and the more there are the more butterflies and birds we will have. When I bought my home in 1981 almost nothing grew here. The previous owners had mistreated the land to the point that it was hard packed bare earth, in some parts it grew knotweed. I have spent the last 38 years slowly creating a garden that I hope feeds insects and therefore birds. Unfortunately people like to kill caterpillars and bees and all sorts of other insects, people who say they love birds. Nature is complicated, we can’t break the chain and expect everything will be all right.
