World Oceans Day is June 8 this year! The ocean is incredibly important to all of us and is environmentally endangered. Many of us know little about its ecological systems and how they support all life including us. On this Planet Philadelphia we will be talking about two ocean ecologies and their importance with:

Angelique Brathwaite: is Director of Science and Management at Blue Finance.  She is a marine biologist who has worked extensively on coral reef ecology and management, especially in her native island of Barbados.  Her career as a marine conservationist includes many years with the government of Barbados.  She will talk about the importance of coral reefs, how they fit into ocean ecology, why sustainable ocean financing is necessary to ocean conservation, as well as the issues that island nations face in preserving their coral reef resources.

Brian and Cindy Wilcox: are co-founders of Marine Bioenergy, Inc. a company using innovative techniques to farm kelp for biofuels.  Brian is an electrical engineer who worked  in NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, including supervising the robotics vehicles group. Cindy trained in economics. They collaborated with marine biologists at the University of Southern California on kelp farming research. They will discuss kelp’s importance, farming kelp effectively, and using kelp for biofuel which has many environmental advantages over current biofuels.

92.9 FM WGGT-LP in Philadelphia
and live streaming at gtownradio.com

Air Pollution endangers our lives in myriad ways. On today’s Planet Philadelphia we discuss what to do about this big problem in national, international, and local arenas. HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons) are much more potent climate change gases than the usual greenhouse gases we hear about—and they’re leaking from many of our refrigerators and air-conditioners. HFCs are starting to be addressed at national and international levels. At a more local level, neighbors are working to curtail natural gas and other air pollution issues that are also affecting our lives. Tune in 4-5:00 PM (ET) today to 92.9 FM WGGT-LP in Philadelphia and live streaming at gtownradio.com to hear what our guests have to say:
Picture
Avipsa Mahapatra: is the climate lead of the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), an international campaigning organization committed to investigating and exposing environmental crime and campaigning to protect endangered species and the natural world. She will discuss their campaign against HFCs, a cooling agent, and the investigative work they did to uncover HFC gas leaks in supermarkets.
Picture
Lynn Robinson: is Director of Neighbors Against the Gas Plants (NAGP), a local advocacy group in the Nicetown area of Philadelphia. She is active in environmental and human rights groups. Lynn is a retired Philadelphia public school teacher. She will talk about the efforts of NAGP to eliminate new SEPTA (the organization which runs public transportation in the area) gas plants plus other environmental and air pollution reduction activities in Philadelphia.

Actions to Control Air Pollution:

National, International,

Air pollution is a significant result of the use of greenhouse gases and other environmental degradation. Did you know that the hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) that cool most of our refrigerators at home and in stores are a serious national and international problem? HFCs are much more potent climate change gases than the usual greenhouse gases we hear about. Hear how HFCs are starting to be addressed at national and international levels. At a more local level, neighbors are working to curtail natural gas and other air pollution issues that are also affecting our lives.

Dr. Tamma Carleton, professor at the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management of the University of California Santa Barbara, and Dr. Richard Bradbury, the head of the “people conservation science” team at the Centre for Conservation Science of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and honorary research fellow at Cambridge University, explore why the social cost of carbon (SCC), its calculation and its amount are important. As examples, would a higher cost of SCC persuade decision makers to lower air pollution, support alternatives to fertilizer, use greener electricity, or conserve natural habitats?

The social and environmental harm fossil fuel pollution causes hasn't generally been taken into account in decisions about how to structure our society. Planet Philadelphia guests today tell us how they hope to change the old way of doing business. Our interviews explore why the SCC, its calculation and its amount are important. As examples, would a higher cost of SCC persuade decision makers to lower air pollution, support alternatives to fertilizer, use greener electricity, or conserve natural habitats?

Explore these issues with guests:
Picture
Dr. Tamma Carleton: is a professor at the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management of the University of California Santa Barbara.  She is the co-author of a recent working paper “Updating the United States Government’s Social Cost of Carbon” to be published in a forthcoming book of energy and environmental policy proposals of the Energy Policy Institute of the University of Chicago.  She will discuss the importance of the SCC and a two-step process to return the United States government’s SCC to the frontier of economics and climate science.

Picture
Dr. Richard Bradbury: is the head of the “people conservation science” team at the Centre for Conservation Science of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and honorary research fellow at Cambridge University. He will discuss research on the economic value of intact ecosystems and the economic benefits of protecting nature – calculations which rely, in part, on the social cost of carbon.
