A free press is essential in a democracy in order that the citizenry be informed when voting. Prior to the election, therefore, we examine the state of environmental news to help guide us in digesting this news, and then give environmental positions of federal and state candidates to inform voting choices. Sharon Friedman is Professor and Director of the Science and Environmental Writing Program in the Department of Journalism and Communication at Lehigh University. She also directs Lehigh’s Environmental Studies Program and is the Associate Director of its Environmental Initiative. Her research focuses on risk communication issues and how scientific, environmental and health issues are communicated to the public. She is the co-author of Reporting on the Environment: A Handbook for Journalists.Sharon will be talking about the state of environmental journalism, what makes for good journalism in this area, and how to evaluate environmental media.​

Liz Robinson founded the Energy Coordinating Agency in Philadelphia and the Keystone Energy Efficiency Alliance (a trade association for energy efficiency in PA and NJ). She also has helped the Energy Coop transition to renewables, and now is the Director of the Philadelphia Solar Energy Association. Liz has been our correspondent from Harrisburg (capital city of PA). She will be reporting on the environmental/climate platforms of our presidential candidates and of our state legislature.

•  Peter Winslow is president of A Smart Collaboration, an LLC which promotes collaboration among groups to bring about environmental and socially responsible goals.  He is active in many different environmental justice movements and projects in the Philadelphia area.  Peter talks about the former Philadelphia refinery (now owned by Hilco) and about plans for a public bank for Philadelphia.
•  Robert B. McKinstry Jr. is a Fellow of the American College of Environmental Law and a Fellow of the American Bar Institute. He discusses a recent administrative law ruling that allows environmental stakeholders to present to Pennsylvania’s Public Utilities Commission (PUC) concerns on environmental issues for the first time.

Brownfield Multipurpose Assessment and Cleanup Grant Funding
Funding from Environmental Protection Agency, Environmental Justice Division of the federal government
Application due 10/28 by 11:59pm
The purpose is to empower states communities, tribes and nonprofit organizations to prevent, inventory, assess, clean up and reuse
brownfield sites. Grants will be given in 3 categories:
multipurpose (10 grants totaling $8 million), assessment (87 grants totaling $32 million), and cleanup (28 grants totaling $13 million). There
are separate applications for each of these categories.

Mijin Cha, JD., LL.M. is an Assistant Professor at Occidental College in the Urban and Environmental Policy Department and Fellow at the Worker Institute at Cornell.  Among her publications are “NYC Green-Collar Jobs Roadmap”.  Her work has included interviewing labor groups as stakeholders in discussing “just transitions”.  Dr. Cha will be in conversation with us about her work, her observations, and suggestions for achieving an equitable transition for workers.

Peter Handler is the group leader of the Philadelphia Chapter of Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL) as well as a furniture maker/artist who lives in the community.  His work is featured above. CCL works with US members of Congress to lobby for climate positive outcomes in a bipartisan way.  Peter will be discussing his experience with labor groups while working on CCL goals in addition to some of the recent work of the CCL Chapter.​​
