6/18/2020

We at Planet Philadelphia recognize a number of media sources are not broadcasting on June 19th in honor of Juneteenth. Environmental justice is the field which highlights the systematic racial injustice in many environments.  Approaches to the issue of the connection between racism and the environment include working as white people to eliminate microaggressions towards people of color in environmental and scientific fields and working for systems change in institutions causing environmental injustice. This show highlights some efforts in both these areas. Tune in to Planet Philadelphia Friday June 19th at 4:00-5:00 PM on 92.9 FM in NW Philadelphia, and at gtownradio.com anywhere, to hear from these local community members working towards racial and environmental justice:
Picture
Dottie Baumgarten, is an environmental consultant/educator and owner of Sustainable Choices since 2009. She works primarily for the Philadelphia Water Department but has some education contracts with area schools and also is a volunteer with local environmental groups. She will be talking about the problems people of color experience in environmental and scientific groups related to the environment - what are the barriers to diversity for them because of white culture and how we, as white people can work to eliminate these barriers.
Picture
Rabbi Julie Greenberg, is the Climate Justice Coordinator of POWER, an interfaith Pennsylvania organization dedicated to social justice through advocacy, organizing, education, direct action and voter engagement.  She also is a Reconstructionist rabbi. She will be talking about a recent hearing to influence the Public Utilities Commission (PUC), which regulates our energy providers, to require a larger proportion of PECO’s (our energy provider, which is owned by Exelon) distributed energy be solar.

Sadness for today and hopes for a better future

6/6/2020

We at Planet Philadelphia are deeply saddened by the murder of George Floyd and the continuing systemic racism and violence in our society. As for the environment, which is the subject of our show, as many have said, equity and justice should be the lens by which we approach our problems. Climate change,  pollution, and other environmental degradation affects us all, but they affect the poor, people of color, and women more. They suffer first and the worst from these problems.

We would like Planet Philadelphia to be part of the solution. We encourage our listeners to send in short descriptions of people and environmental projects in our region who are working to change these racist dynamics.  We will post them on our website.  Please send these descriptions to: [email protected]

Unexpected show outage on June 5th

6/6/2020

If you tuned in yesterday, June 5th, expecting to hear from Congressman Dwight Evans and Reverend MitchelI C. Hescox, I apologize that we were unable to air the scheduled Planet Philadelphia radio show.  The powerful thunderstorms that came through earlier in the week knocked out our power, as it did for thousands of other unfortunate people.  We were very grateful that Gtown Radio was able to run a repeat broadcast.

We now finally have electricity back and are back at work to bring you engaging informative interviews, news, and commentary about our shared world. We will air the program with Congressman Dwight Evans and Reverend MitchelI C. Hescox, soon. We will update you on exactly when.

Thank you for listening to Planet Philadelphia.
Stay safe and connected everyone,
Kay Wood
