Grid Stability:
General and Local
Planet Philadelphia 4-5:00 PM Friday3/5/21
92.9 FM WGGT-LPin Philadelphia
and live streaming at gtownradio.com
.

Severe weather events are likely to be more frequent because of climate change. The energy grid has not been able to handle all these events. So, in the wake of the rolling blackouts in Texas recently, in California this summer, and in other states, what should we know about grid stability? How is our Pennsylvania, or even Philadelphia, grid equipped to deal with severe weather events? What should be done to provide more resilience? Tune in to Planet Philadelphia environmental radio show 4-5:00 PM Friday 3/5/21 for this and more with guests:

  • Karen Miu, Ph.D.: is professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Drexel University. She works on distribution networks, infrastructure and power systems. She will be telling us generally how the grid works and implications for grid stability. Recent developments involving interactions with customers and their energy choices as they use the grid is another component of grid stability, one which introduces behavioral elements.

  • Emily Shapira:  is President and CEO of Philadelphia Energy Authority, which works with Philadelphia on energy issues. She will discuss the stability of our grid in Pennsylvania and Philadelphia compared to that in the various states where there have been recent rolling blackouts. She will also talk about the steps towards resilience that need to be taken to make the grid more stable.

Transportation is one of the big contributors to greenhouse gases as well as pollution. Public transportation, which may be better for the environment, is having significant financial problems, which are being exacerbated by COVID-19. How can we address these environmental transportation problems?

  • Dr. Megan Smirti Ryerson is the UPS Chair of Transportation and a professor in the departments of City and Regional Planning and of Electrical and Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. Her work in in transportation infrastructure planning and demand forecasting and her work supports the design of transportation systems that are safe efficient and resilient. She will tell us about the problems with our current transportation systems, the intersection of these issues with the environment, and how we might fix these problems.

  • Dr. Eric Goldwyn is a researcher and professor at New York University. Among his affiliations there is the Transportation and Land-Use program at the Marron Institute. He works on transportation planning and technology with practical implications, particularly in urban settings. He will be talking about work on urban transportation systems in our COVID-19 era and the future.
