11/24/2022

Planet Philadelphia
4-5:00 PM today

92.9 FM WGGT-LP in Philadelphia & live streaming at https://gtownradio.com.

Regrowing our natural environment and ecosystem is important for health, ecological stability, and ameliorating climate change.  We explore two projects which have ways to do this, one in a rural area and one in an urban area.
Picture
Dr. J. Boone Kauffman is a research professor of Ecosystems Ecology in the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Sciences at Oregon State University.  His work centers on understanding dynamic interactions of land use, climate change and their influences on ecosystem services.  He is the co-author of the 2022 IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) special report on Land Use, land cover change and forestry.  George Wuerthner  is an ecologist, writer and photographer who has published many books on natural history and environmental issues.  His latest book is “Protecting the Wild: Parks and Wilderness the Foundation for Conservation”.  They will tell us about a novel and relatively simple approach to rewilding public lands in the American West.
Picture
Erica Smith Fichman is the Community Forestry Manager of the Philadelphia government’s Parks and Recreation Department.  She is the project lead for the Philly Tree Plan.  Erica will be talking about the new Philly Tree Plan to protect trees and the urban forest within Philadelphia, including a planned Reforestation Hub.

Only working at the community level and empowering community voices and approaches will ultimately be effective in ameliorating environmental justice issues let alone general environmental issues. Regional approaches to this way of working are seen in our interviews about the southern U.S., particularly South Carolina, and about the Delaware Valley, particularly Philadelphia. Guests:

Planet Philadelphia environmental radio show 4-5:00 PM Friday 11/18/22:
Many in the environmental justice movement recognize that only working at the community level and empowering community voices and approaches will ultimately be effective in ameliorating environmental justice issues let alone general environmental issues.  Regional approaches to this way of working are seen in our interviews about the southern U.S., particularly South Carolina, and about the Delaware Valley, particularly Philadelphia.
  • Reverend Leo Woodberry is the Pastor of Kingdom Living Temple in Florence S.C. and Executive Director of the New Alpha Community Development Corporation.  He has worked on environmental justice issues for many decades in the South, is recognized by the S.C. State Senate for community service and has contributed at national and international (e.g., U.N.)  levels to these issues.  He is the convenor of a yearly conference on environmental justice held in Florence S.C. He will be discussing the approach this conference and his network are taking to implement community-based solutions to environmental justice and the work he and his group are doing at national and international levels.
  • Mathy Stanislaus, Esq. is Vice Provost of Drexel University and the inaugural Executive Director of the newly created institute, The Environmental Collaboratory.  He has worked for and with senior leaders from government, community organization and the corporate sector in the U.S. and globally – from the board to the community room.  Most recently, he was the first interim director and policy director of the Global Battery Alliance, a multi-stakeholder initiative established at the World Economic Forum.  He will be discussing the Collaboratory, established by Drexel University and the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia to work with the community to develop co-designed solutions and authentic partnerships.
