The Delaware Valley and Philadelphia region has one of the worst air pollution problems in the nation. Air pollution causes considerable environmental injustice and health problems.  What are some approaches that could mitigate air pollution? We talk about this with these guests today.
Picture
Alex Bomstein is the Director of Litigation for the Clean Air Council of Philadelphia, an organization that has been working to insure there is clean air since 1967.  Alex will discuss some of the issues involved in litigating for clean air, the effectiveness of legal work to help with pollution, and some of the kinds of cases he currently works on.

Picture
Peter Winslow is a long-term advocate for the environmental and social justice community in the Philadelphia region and has talked to us regularly about city environmental justice issues. He will discuss the development of citizen projects to monitor air quality in the region, as well as update us on other local environmental stories.

Also on this show: News related to air pollution and air quality.

Talking with Children
About the Environment

Picture
Jeremy Wortzel and Lena Champlin
We will be bequeathing our environment to the next generation. What do the children think about environmental issues? How can we engage with them fruitfully about climate change? On this show:
  • Jeremy Wortzel and Lena Champlin respectively are a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania and a doctoral student in Environmental and Earth Science at Drexel University.  Jeremy will be a child and adolescent psychiatry resident at Brigham and Women’s Hospital next year. Lena also is a research associate on the Academy of Natural Sciences museum, where she conducts outreach to families. Along with help from the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry (GAP) – Climate Committee, this engaged couple wrote and illustrated a children’s book on talking with children about climate change.  The aim of the book is to help children lessen their anxiety about this problem. They will talk about how to engage children concerning climate change without increasing their anxiety.
  • Voices of children.  For Earth Day, April 22, Planet Philadelphia visited the Academy of Natural Sciences and recorded children’s observations about the environment and their experience of Earth Day at the Academy.  Additional recordings of these interviews will air on subsequent shows.
  • News related to children/adolescents and the environment
