We are sea over processing oil + gas
in our communities to export abroad.
Some say it's smart to do this. Is it?

Should we still build new infrastructure to move highly volatile natural gas liquids through our communities? Or have petroleum products manufactured in the middle of a dense population? Tune 4-5:00 pm today to hear discussions these urgent issues on today’s live Planet Philadelphia environmental radio show, WGGT-LP 92.9 FM in Philadelphia and/or live streaming anywhere at gtownradio.com:
  • Tracy Carluccio, Deputy Director of the Delaware Riverkeeper Network will tell us what is happening with the LNG terminal that may be built in Gibbstown NJ to export LNG overseas. She will also talk about whether the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) provided meaningful review over the proposed Gibbstown LNG Export facility.

  • Peter Winslow, Future for PES?:  Peter Winslow has followed developments at PES (Philadelphia Energy Solutions, the largest refinery on the east coast) for several years.  This is the next installment is about the fast moving situation at the former PES refinery in the wake of the explosion, fires and closure of the facility. Build more gas infrastructure? What’s up with PES now? Planet Philadelphia live environmental radio show 4-5:00 tomorrow, Friday 11/15/19

11/14/2019

There’s a lot of disputes these days over gas infrastructure – some of which carry highly volatile natural gas liquids (LNG) through our communities. According to the AP, the FBI has begun a corruption investigation into how permits were approved for one PA pipeline project. Another pipeline project suffered a potentially huge setback in federal court. And there are disputes over whether or not Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)  provided meaningful review over the proposed Gibbstown LNG Export facility. On top of that unfortunately, there’s the whole thorny issue of what to do with the PES refinery that blew up last June to be resolved.

I drew this cartoon a few years back about the then projected extreme weather predicted with climate change and what it would feel like. It looks like we’re on that roller coaster right now. Philly’s weather went from 66 degrees yesterday to snow today and record cold for tomorrow.

Cooperating on getting to a greener world

Tune in to Planet Philadelphia environmental radio show 4-5:00 PM today on WGGT-LP 92.9 FM in Philadelphia and/or listen to the live stream at gtownradio.com to hear guests with real world experience discuss challenges and strategies on meeting their organization’s member's needs while also trying to be better stewards of the planet:

  • Ron Fisher, Energy Co-op Executive Director: The Energy Co-op is a nonprofit cooperative helping with consumer energy needs since 1979. It was founded by grocery cooperative Weavers Way to source reliable affordable heating oil to its members during an oil embargo by Middle Eastern nations. The cooperative has continued to address energy issues faced by Philadelphians since that time. It was the first supplier in the Delaware Valley to offer renewable electricity sourced from wind turbines in 1999. Then in 2014 it became, and remains, the only supplier in the region of renewable natural gas sourced mainly from landfills. Energy Co-op Director Fisher will talk about new cleaner energy sources and storage options, and about the Co-op’s two new important initiatives aiming to help people save more energy and money.

  • Jon Roesser, Weavers Way General Manager: Weavers Way Cooperative Association has operated a grocery-based consumer organization that is owned and governed by its members since the mid 1970s. General Manager Rosser will talk about  the co-op’s energy usage - particularly related to the challenges associated with owning smaller, older buildings. He will also talk about some of the difficult challenges of being a food retailer whose mission is meeting member's needs and also be better stewards of the planet.
