Both laws and regulations constrain, and sometimes help, what can be done for our environment.  Here are some actions and suggestions to help cope with various environmental issues of our region.
  • Rep. Greg Vitali is the Pennsylvania state representative of the 166th legislative district.  He serves as Majority Chair of the House Environmental and Natural Resource Protection Committee.  Rep. Vitali introduced House Bill 364 which would restore a Board under the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the Environmental Quality Board’s, authority to increase conventional oil and gas well plugging bonds to help prevent hundreds of new well abandonments a year.  He also introduced House Bill 109, legislation requiring stricter oversight of industrial permits in environmental justice areas.  He will discuss these bills.
  • Liz Robinson is the Executive Director of the Philadelphia Solar Energy Association.  She also is a long-time advocate for environmental issues, particularly in the Philadelphia region.  She will talk, more in depth this time, about increases in energy prices for consumers and businesses as well as about the regulatory environment for energy, particularly in Pennsylvania.

2025 Household Hazardous Waste Collection Dates Announced

3/7/2025

The Philadelphia Sanitation Department has announced seven Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection events for 2025! These events offer residents a safe way to dispose of hazardous materials that are not accepted through regular trash or recycling collection.

Event Dates & Locations (9 AM – 3 PM):
  • Saturday, April 5, 2025 – Northeast Philadelphia, 8401 State Rd., 19136
  • Saturday, May 10, 2025 – West Philadelphia, 4800 Parkside Ave., 19131
  • Saturday, June 14, 2025 – Northwest Philadelphia, 320 Domino Lane, 19128
  • Thursday, July 10, 2025 – Northeast Philadelphia, 8401 State Rd., 19136
  • Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025 – North Philadelphia, 2121 W. York St., 19132
  • Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025 – Southwest Philadelphia, 3033 S. 63rd St., 19153
  • Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025 – Port Richmond, 3901 N. Delaware Ave., 19137
Important Reminders
  • No computers – Take them to a Sanitation Convenience Center during normal business hours.
  • Latex/water-based paint – Not hazardous! If dried up or solidified with an absorbent material like kitty litter, it can be placed in regular trash.
  • No business waste – These events are strictly for household waste.

Proper Disposal Matters
Hazardous materials, labeled toxic, flammable, corrosive, or reactive, require special handling to protect people, pets, and the environment. Improper disposal can be harmful. Just one gallon of used oil can contaminate one million gallons of freshwater.
The The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) estimates that the average household accumulates up to 100 pounds of hazardous waste each year, including oil-based paint, used oil, solvents, pesticides, and car batteries. These materials should never be thrown in regular trash but instead taken to an Household Hazardous Waste event for safe disposal.

For more details and a full list of accepted materials, visit the Household Hazardous Waste page on phila.gov. Let’s keep our city clean and safe!
