Podcast: 2nd Anniversary Planet Philadelphia Environmental Radio Show streamed on GTown Radio 9/15/17

9/16/2017

It’s been two years of great reporting on our environment, bringing home how we are all affected by our environment here in Philly and in the world. Celebrate this second anniversary by listening to Planet Philadelphia with a very special guest, Dr. John Goodenough. He will tell us about the future of batteries to revolutionize energy production and decrease fossil fuel. Hear that and more:

  • Dr. John Goodenough, inventor of the lithium-ion battery (used in all our smart phones, many electronic home devices, and some electric cars), will discuss his recent announcement of the potential for the first all solid-state battery.  This research is so revolutionary that Newsweek described it as having the potential to “save the planet”.  Dr. Goodenough is a physicist with joint appointments in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin.  He has been given numerous national and international honors including the Enrico Fermi Award (2009), and the National Medal of Science presented by President Obama (2011).

  • Also on this anniversary show, Michelle Kondo of the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) will tell us about the new collaboration between the Schuylkill Center, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, and the USFS.  This collaboration will connect primary care pediatric health and wellness with nature and time spent being active outdoors.

  • Cyane Gresham, professional gardener, on what to look for in our yards and gardens in September.

  • Maya Van Rossum, the Delaware River Keeper, comments on the Delaware River Basin Commission possible fracking regulations – is it a bad trade?

Host, Kay Wood, and reporter, Linda Rosenwein, bring you great interviews plus news, music and more on your favorite local radio station, GTown Radio (http://www.gtownradio.com), the first and third Friday of every month. Shows will be podcast on the Planet Philadelphia site a few days after they air.

President Trump wants to get rid of programs that protect us from pollution of all sorts. In today’s Planet Philadelphia host Kay Wood speaks with Jacqueline Patterson, the Director of the NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Program. Ms Patterson talks about the heavier burden placed on people of color by pollution right now from using fossil fuels. If the Trump administration gets it’s way, it will have a devastating impact on communities that already suffer an out-sized toxic burden.

Also on Planet Philadelphia today we get an update from the courts. Nate Bellinger, Staff Attorney and State Program Manager of Our Children's Trust lawsuit, discusses the government’s breach of trust with climate change. Lots more interesting environmental news, as well.
