Climate change is rapidly affecting our world and thereby our health. It is also changing medicine. We explore ways medical education is changing to keep up with these developments.
  • Dr. Farah Hussain, MD is Director of Planetary Health at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School where she helped develop a planetary health curriculum starting in 2022, one of the first few curricula in the nation to address sustainability and climate change.
  • Dr. Harleen Marwah, MD MS, is a Pediatrician, an Editorial Fellow at the New England Journal of Medicine & an appointed member of the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council. She worked with Dr. Hussain to develop the above curriculum.
  • Dr. Genevieve (Genny) Silva, MD MBA, graduated in 2024 from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and the Wharton School, where she studied environmental sustainability in business. She also worked with Dr. Hussain to develop the curriculum.
  • Phoebe Cunningham is a current MD/MPH student at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine with an MPH focus on climate change and sustainability. She is a current leader of the Healthcare Sustainability Group and on the Student Advisory Committee for the Environmental Innovations Initiative at the university level. She is currently working with Dr. Hussain to further the development of the curriculum and sustainability at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.
They will be talking about the development of a sustainability and climate change curriculum at the University’s medical school and other ways the medical school is working on sustainability.
